Robert Bateman, Artist, Saltspring Island, British Columbia (BA 1954 Victoria College)
I studied geography at U of T because I was interested in the natural world. Also, taking geography and geology gave me the chance for summer jobs in the wilderness where I could paint in my spare time. This I did in Algonquin Park, Newfoundland and Arctic Quebec. Our geology party in Ungava included two Inuit who thought we were the first to explore the area. U of T provided me with role models I had not known before, individuals who were at home in the wilderness and yet were interested in the arts and culture. These included many biology graduate students as well as art educators John Hall and Carl Schaefer.
